About us

Aleph Books was founded in 1986 and started out as a market stall on one of the bridges in Utrecht. After about six months, Jan van Hassel and Paul van den Hoven decided to move into the shop at the Vismarkt. They have made the shop what it is today: a treasure trove with books on all kinds of subjects with a specialty in art, literature, and philosophy, a great number of (classical) CD’s, and the occasional print. On January 1 st 2023, the shop changed ownership and is now run by Ris Schortinghuis. They had been helping out at the shop for roughly seven years before they took over. They have a background in comparative literary studies and have been a bookseller for over ten years.
